Mr Ibrahim Gobir, the chairman of senate committee on services has defended the actions of the senates in deciding to purchase dozens of Toyota Land Cruisers that worth N36.5 million each for the senators despite the economic crunch facing the country. Premium Times reports that Mr Gobir had on Tuesday in Abuja told the journalists that the Toyota Land Cruiser specification was VXR V8 and not V6 as being speculated by the media. Mr Gobir further defended the price at which the cars were purchased and said the price was reasonable. He gave the showroom price to be N31 million minimum, then the addition of 10 percent tax amounts it to N36.5 million. According to him, the total numbers of cars purchased were 36 and not 108 as being reported by the media. Mr Gobir also clarified the issues on law makers using loan to purchase the cars. he said that the money for the cars were appropriated in 2015 budget and that no law makers got any car loan. He further stated if directors in the civil service, ministers, and permanent secretaries owned either Land cruiser or Prado, why is it wrong for a senator to own a Land cruiser.
