Zuma to talk with Buhari over MTN fine

The South African President Jacob Zuma is to arrive Nigeria next for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari to find a solution to the disagreement over the $1.04tn fine imposed on MTN Nigeria which was later reduced to N780bn. The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu on wednesday said that they have concluded plans for the meeting that would be holding next week. MTN Nigeria was fined $1.0tn which was later reduced to N780bn, but paid the sum of N50bn last week and withdrew its law suit against the Nigerian Communications Commission. The Federal Government still maintains that the payment they made is only a part payment of the fine imposed on them. According to Mr Shittu, he said that it is only President Buhari who can decide on whether to pardon the company for the penalty or not. Meanwhile, an anonymous official from MTN Group in South Africa said that the telecom company might return to court if the Nigerian Government did not reduce the fine of N780bn. But the MTN Nigeria refused to comment on the issue.
