Zika virus is an outbreak in most American countries which is seriously affecting the babies in the wombs. This virus causes microcephaly( failure of the brain to grow at normal rate). It also causes a rare nervous disorder Guillian-Barre syndrome that causes temporary paralysis. The virus was discovered first in monkies in Uganda in 1947 and the first human case was detected in Nigeria in 1954. This virus is spread by Aedes mosquitoes which is found throughout Americas. This same mosquitoes cause dengue and chikungunya virus. They transmit Zika virus to someone by biting after they must have sucked the blood of an infected person. Its symptoms include mild fever, headache, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). In may 2015, the virus was reported first in Brazil and has spread rapidly. At the moment, it has spread to Barbados, Bolivia, Colombia,Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Mexico and other parts of South America. There is no cure or treatment for the virus.
