The Nigerian Labour Congress NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC have proposed N56,000 as the new national minimum wage to the Federal Government. Mr Ayuba Wabba, the NLC president stated this during a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja. According to Premium Times, Mr Wabba said the demand was officially made to the Federal Government on Tuesday. He said it was a high time the minimum was increased, since the law allowed wages of workers to be reviewed after every five years. According to Mr Wabba, the minimum wage was last reviewed in 2011 and was increased to N18,000. As at 2011 the increase was made, $1 was equivalent to N110, but now we all know what a dollar stands for. Purchasing power has fallen so low that the current N18,000 minimum wage can not be enough for a worker for a period of 30 days.
